Thanks for watching my video on The Best Grass Seed!
Video
Hi there guys it's Christy with self-mademovie.com and in this video we're going to go through the best grass seed currently on the market today, so I've tried to keep this list as comprehensive as possible.
So no matter what kind of seed you need for whatever kind of condition, there'll be something in this list for you.
So before we jump in and drop a like subscribe and turn on that Bell.
If you want to be updated with new videos, alright, so I'm not going to go through any of the fluff talk.
You probably know around about what you're looking for so I'm just going to get into the list and give my recommendation for each one.
So the first one on my list is the Jonathan green black beauty, original grass seed blend, and this is my recommendation for the best seed for a cool season lawn.
So some of the main highlights here complete coverage, so it's a 50 pound bag that will seed up to 7500 square feet for new Lawns and for over seeding.
This bag will seed up to 15 000 square feet and the germination time is around 10 to 14 days.
So the best time to apply this seed is around mid-august to mid-october, while the ground is still warm and the nights are cooler and the next best time is probably mid-march through to mid-may now this 100 tall, fescue grass seed blend is perfect for growing in sunny and shady areas and the Black Beauty original grass seed thickens and strengthens any sunny or Shady cool season lawn.
So the cool season grass seed blend, it features a surf type tall fescues that are dark, green in color, uniform in leaf texture and will not shred when moan and will Thrive under adverse growing conditions.
So the Grassroots can grow up to four feet.
Deep for Superior drought, tolerance and the waxy coating on the leaves helps preserve moisture when hot, so the next one on the list is my recommendation for a full sun or partial shade areas, and it's the Pennington, try Fescue 50 pound bag seed and each bag will cover 10 000 square feet.
So a couple of highlights here: no notches seeds.
So you get what you pay for with this Fescue blend and the trifescue burn doesn't contain any unwanted seeds and basically, what you see on the label is what you get also provides very deep roots, so Fescue varieties are designed to root deep to help handle the rigors of both summer droughts and high heat indexes to keep your lawn looking very green and healthy.
You can also plant in different areas, so Pennington has cultivated a Fescue blend designed to flourish in Sunny areas as well as areas with partial shade, giving you the build ability to grow The, Perfect Lawn in a multitude of different conditions.
This has also been researched before coming to Market and Pennington.
The brand has always prided itself to be on The, Cutting, Edge of the newest and most efficient varieties on the market.
So you've got a perfect amount of seed here, so the 50 pound bag allows you the option to use a little for a spot seed or overseed your entire lawn for up to 10 000 square feet.
The next one on my list is my recommendation for the best seed mix for Sun Shade and More Southern Lawns.
So this is the Paddington smart seed, sun and shade tall fescue grass seed mix and a couple of highlights.
So this is going to cover up to 5 000 square feet and you can see results in 8 to 21 days now.
This seed allows you to save up to 30 more water every year versus ordinary grass seed, and it's about ability is very good, so this is built for hot humid and very harsh conditions and for areas getting around about four to six hours sunlight.
So this is the ideal grass seed for lawns that receive sun in some parts or moderate shade in others, and as I said, this is my recommendation as a grass seed and fertilizer mix for southern tall fescue Lawns, the next one on the list is my recommendation for the best full mix.
So this is the Scots Turf Builder grass seed full mix to help lawn recovery from Summer stress.
This only comes in a 15 pound bag.
However, it's a fine bladed texture with medium drought.
Resistance and it grows quicker and thicker and greener than most others.
It also contains an exclusive four in one water, Smart Plus coating that absorbs two times more water than uncoated seed and feeds to jumpstart growth and help protect seedlings against disease, so, as establishes quickly to help the lawn recover from that sum of stress over seeding mix thickens and strengthens to help prevent future weeds as well, so a great option for repairing any summer damaged Lawns, and this will also grow well in sunny and shady areas.
The next one on my list is my recommendation for the best value it's another one from Scots, and this is the Scott's Turf Builder thicker lawn grass, seed, fertilizer and soil improver for both sun and shade, and this is coming in a 40 pound bag.
Now this is going to give you 50 thicker lawn with just one easy application with a spreader.
So this is, of course, subject to proper care and results, May Vary, but that's what it is purporting to do.
It has a soil improver for enhanced root development.
It has a fertilizer for thicker, Greener Turf and the seeds are great for filling gaps in your current lawn.
So this is a three in one solution, uh, which is why I give it my best value uh and includes both seed fertilizer and a soil improver as well.
Now I have a final recommendation uh for my best cool season lawn seed, and this is from Jonathan Green, another Black Beauty Ultra grass seed.
So this is naturally resistant to disease and pests.
It can grow in different types of soil, including clay and sand, and the grass can tolerate both full sun and partial, safe.
So a very durable, versatile option here.
This is a 25 pound bag that will seed up to 5 000 square feet or for over seeding.
It will seed up to 10 000 square feet again.
The germination time is around 7 to 14 days, like the other Jonathan Green option.
So this grass seed mix features a full sun to partial, shade, best time to apply again mid-august to October the next best time mid-march through to may very good at retaining moisture.
These roots can grow up to four feet deep and also have a waxy Leaf coating and black beauty.
Ultra preserves, moisture and limit evaporation, while also withstanding heavy beating heavy traffic, whatever you want to call it.
So this is going to provide you with a dark green lawn, so this produces a healthy, dense and attractive Turf with a dark, green color and the grass types included are tall, fescues, Kentucky, Bluegrass and perennial rye grass, also great for filling in burst spots.
So this seed quickly germinates for a fast establishment of newly seeded Lawns.
It also rapidly fills in burst spots to invigorate thin or damaged Lawns living up to its name.
There, alright guys.
So those are my best grass seeds that I found currently on the market.
Today, I had a list of about 15 that I've narrowed down to what was that five or six try to keep it as comprehensive as possible.
Depending on what you want? Do you want the thicker lawn? Do you want something for summer? Do you want something for winter? Do you want the big bag? That's going to cover 10, 000 square feet or a smaller bag is fine for spa hot seating.
Hopefully there's something here for you.
If you have any questions, do drop them in the comments and if you found value in this video, it really helps.
If you drop a like And subscribe and I'll, see you on the next one.
Take care.

Does it matter if you mix grass seed? ›
If you mix turfgrass varieties, you may end up with a lawn that is less than ideal. This is because each type of turfgrass has different requirements in terms of sunlight, water, and nutrients. Thus, when you mix different types of turfgrass, it can be difficult to provide the ideal conditions for all of them.
Is expensive grass seed worth it? ›The important part, when you buy grass seed for your yard, is that the old motto holds true – “you get what you pay for.” Higher quality seed will have better quality varieties, will be more free of weed seeds, and more free of “other crop” seeds.
Is it better to water new grass seed in morning or evening? ›The best time to water grass seed is in the morning and evening. These are the coolest parts of the day, which allows water to absorb into the ground instead of evaporating.
Should I water before or after grass seed? ›A few days before planting your new grass seed, water the entire area about 6-8 inches deep each day. Once you've spread the seed, promptly spend about 5-10 minutes watering the top two inches of soil. The seeded area will need to stay moist so the grass seed doesn't dry out and die.
How do I prepare my yard for grass seed? ›Remove large rocks and debris, fill in low spots, and if your soil is compacted, work it over with a tiller. Your goal is to break the soil down to pea- or marble-sized particles, which will serve as a welcome mat for the grass seed.
Can you use too much grass seed? ›Don't overdo or cut corners. Too much grass seed causes undue competition for resources such as light, water and nutrients, and grass seedlings struggle as a result. Too little seed leaves lawns thin or bare.
Should grass seed be buried? ›Once you finish spreading the seed, use a rake to lightly work it into the soil at a depth of about 1/4 inch. Don't bury the seeds any deeper; grass seed needs adequate light to germinate quickly. After raking, pass over the area with a roller, which helps ensure the good seed-to-soil contact your new seed needs.
Can I put grass seed over dead grass that is laying in my yard? ›Seeding to Revive Dead Grass
Seeding a dead lawn is effective but is also the slowest option. You will need to prepare the soil by removing the dead grass and then enriching the soil ahead of laying down new seeds. After the seeds are planted, you will need to fertilize and nurture your grass until it reaches maturity.
- Don't cover the ground entirely with seed. You want to see some bare ground between the seeds in order to give the seedlings enough nutrients.
- Avoid planting grass seed too soon after applying weed prevention and control products.
- Don't water excessively. Pools of water can cause your seed to wash away.
If you stop watering, either your seed won't germinate or your precious new grass will die.
What is the purpose of putting straw over grass seed? ›
Straw is a traditional aid that is often recommended to go on top of a newly seeded bed, mainly to help hold in moisture.
What grass stays green the longest? ›Do you long for a lush grass that stays green all year? Fall is the perfect time to establish a beautiful new tall fescue lawn. This popular grass variety adapts well to diverse environments, including damp or shady areas and colder climates.
What is the longest lasting grass? ›Perennial Ryegrass
Perennial ryegrass is the most durable variety of grass, so it is the most popular grass for golf courses in northern climates.
Kentucky Bluegrass
It has a deep greenish and sometimes a bluish color and has a coarse, dry texture when touched. Kentucky Bluegrass has an intense root system below the soil. For this reason, it is classified as being an extremely thick and durable grass.
1. Zoysia Grass. Zoysia is best the lowest-maintenance grass due to its ability to grow in various conditions, thanks to its deep root system. It is one of the most drought-tolerant grass species and requires far less water than other types of grass.
What grass seed to use in very poor soil? ›- Kentucky bluegrass.
- Perennial ryegrass.
- Fescue grass.
RTF [ rhizomatous tall fescue] is an advanced turf-type tall fescue that produces rhizomes. Rhizomes are small underground lateral shoots that allow a plant to spread laterally. This enables the turf area to self repair itself.
What is the most popular grass type? ›Kentucky bluegrass is the most popular grass used for lawn in the United States, and for good reason.
What makes grass spread faster? ›One of the most effective ways to get your grass to grow fast is to fertilize right after you plant. - Dethatch and Aerate Your Lawn. ...

How do you grow grass on top of weeds? ›
Once the weeds are dead, use a weeding tool to pull them out by the root, making sure to remove the entire root system. After removing weeds throughout the lawn, seed in bare patches and overseed the entire lawn. Then water to help the new seed germinate.
Can you put grass seed down twice? ›Make at least 3 applications of seed, each a week or so apart. More applications are fine, too. Applying a large amount of seed to the lawn gives the competitive advantage to the perennial ryegrass over the weed seeds which are already lurking in the soil. Don't apply crabgrass preventer.
What naturally kills weeds but not grass? ›Vinegar. Acetic acid is the active ingredient that makes vinegar a weed killer. White vinegar contains about 5% acetic acid. This level of acetic acid burns the tops off weeds but is less likely to kill anything with well-established roots.
What is the best grass seed that also kills weeds? ›Zoysia is ideal because it actually grows differently. It sends out runners or "stolons," expanding sideways more than it grows tall. This is why it is so dense and effective at choking out most summer weeds and replacing existing grass.
Does aerating lawn help with weeds? ›Aerating your lawn allows vital nutrients, water, sunlight and oxygen to sink in and reach the root system of your lawn. This will promote a healthy and deep root system, giving you a lush green lawn that is better equipped to defend against the intrusion of unwanted weeds and grasses.
Should I overseed if I have weeds? ›If weedy patches and bare spots make up less than half your lawn, overseeding is an excellent option for you. It is certainly easier and more cost-effective than digging up your entire yard and laying down all new sod, which can be an expensive and painstaking process.
Is fescue or Kentucky bluegrass better? ›While Kentucky bluegrass stands up to the North's coldest winters, extreme heat and sunshine can scorch or kill its leaves. Tall fescue is more tolerant of hot weather, making it best suited for transitional climate zones and cool-season regions with milder winters.
Is it OK to mix different types of grass seed? ›The answer to the initial question of “can I mix turfgrass varieties?” is “yes”. You can mix turfgrass varieties as long as they are of the same species. But perhaps the better question is “should I?” If you mix turfgrass varieties, you may end up with a lawn that is less than ideal.
Can I sprinkle grass seed on bare spots? ›Seeding bare spots in lawn areas is a simple task that can be completed in just a few hours. It can take several weeks for new seed to turn into green grass, but the wait is definitely worth it. Before you seed the area, get down and dirty by pulling weeds and removing any dead grass from the area.
Do I need to remove old grass before seeding? ›Allowing the dead grass to build up also weakens the grass around it and will cause even more of it to die. So removing it is important. Especially if you are planting grass and have more than a half inch of dead grass anywhere in your lawn it needs to be removed before the new seed is planted.
Do you put grass seed down before or after fertilizer? ›
Do I apply the fertilizer before seeding or after? Apply the fertilizer before seeding. When is the best time to plant a new lawn? Spring and fall are the best times to plant a new lawn.
Why mix bluegrass with fescue? ›Mixing hybrid bluegrass with tall fescue may increase the quality of the turf stand when compared with individual monocultures of these species. Seeding mixtures of different species increase the genetic variability of a turfgrass stand (Donald, 1963).
Is it OK to mix Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue? ›Hard (fine) fescue and Kentucky bluegrass seed can be added to the tall fescue seed at the rate of 1 to 2 lb of each species per 1,000 square feet. In the absence of a soil test recommendation, apply a starter-type (high phosphorous) fertilizer. Keep the seedbed moist with light watering several times per day.
Can I mix topsoil and grass seed? ›Do not put top soil over grass seed, but you can add a thin layer of organic matter to help the seed to germinate. 'Never put topsoil over newly planted grass seed,' says Yamaguchi. 'This won't provide healthy growing conditions – it will actually prevent the seedlings from sprouting by essentially suffocating them.
What does too much grass seed look like? ›You'll know if you seeded too heavy when the grass grows in very thick patches. These patches look great initially but are eventually thinned out by turf disease.
